Organic Children's Clothes - Benefits of Eco-Friendly Children's Clothes
Parents are becoming more eco-conscious when it comes to clothes for the children. Organic children's clothes are sprouting up everywhere and products are marketed as having "organic cotton." But what does this mean? What is organic cotton versus non-organic cotton? In short, organic cotton is cultivated using methods that have a low impact on the environment. Most people think this usually means no pesticides and they would be correct however, being "organic" goes further that this. Organic production entails using methods that replenish the soil's fertility, reduce pesticide use, and build biologically diverse agriculture. All cotton sold as "organic" must meet U.S. federal regulations that are pretty strict.
Clothing companies, not just companies that produce organic children's clothes, are implementing programs or using companies that implement programs that use either 100 percent organically grown cotton or blend a percentage of organically grown cotton with synthetic cotton. This trend seems to only be growing as the level of awareness children's clothes is increasing. In fact, according to the Organic Trade Association, in 2006, organic lines and clothing sales in the United States grew by 26 percent over 2005. To delve even deeper, children's clothes made from organic fibers grew 52 percent over this same period of time and infant's clothing and cloth diapers grew 40 percent.
Organic clothes also has a more pragmatic benefit other than reducing your carbon footprint. It is actually sturdier than conventionally produced cotton so it will end up cheaper in the long run. Recent studies have shown that this is most likely due to conventionally grown cotton fibers being handled and processed many times more than sustainable cotton before products made from them before they hit production.
